School Sport

I have included below some features of well run afternoon sport sessions as I have been observing over the past 6 weeks.

Team Sizes – Well run sessions have manageable team sizes. If you have  group of 30, than 15 per side is too large for small fields. Either split the teams in two and rotate the teams or have substitutes. This gives the players more involvement when they are on the field and minimises behaviour issues that arise because of overcrowding.

Braids – use braids to make it clear which team the players are on. This helps you a lot for refereeing also.

Maintaining supervision – good sessions are well managed by people actively refereeing the games and giving feedback to the players about performance and behaviour.

Ongoing Feedback - As mentioned above, ongoing feedback is crucial to maintain control of the game and group. Use a whistle and make your calls loud and clear.

Warm up - warming up is very important and helps you to get to know the students and prepare them for what is ahead. Make it fun!!

Enforcing rules – Good sessions have the referee taking control of the game early and being active in refereeing. If you do not enforce the rules early and lack consistency then the players will push the boundaries and the game will become more and more difficult to manage.

Think about any of these areas you think you can improve on and try to apply this over the next 2 weeks.
